Harmony was up by the time my alarm dragged me from bed the following morning. I found her in the kitchen, wearing a mismatched set of pajamas: the button-up top featuring martini glasses on a blue background, the bottoms with fluffy white cats on a pink background.
She glanced over at me from the sink, her heart-shaped face illuminated by the morning sunlight beaming through the large garden window. âMorning,â she said with a sleepy smile. âCoffeeâs all ready, if you want some.â
âWant, need, turn-into-a-raving-loon-without,â I teased, crossing the kitchen on a wave of the rich smelling brew.
âDid you want to go to the apothecary with me today?â Harmony asked, on her way to check the contents of a small sauce pot on the stove. âWith Holly gone, I canât guarantee Iâll be able to offer much by way of entertainment, but if you just need a place to hang, youâre more than welcome.â
It struck me as odd that no one seemed all that concerned that I might just opt out of this whole situation and bolt for the border or something. Holly and Adam werenât my official babysittersâat least not as far as I knewâbut it was clear they were somewhat taking responsibility for me as Brandon had essentially put me under their care. Still, nothing was keeping me here. I was a grown woman, and though the cab fare all the way back to Tacoma would drain my meager savings, perhaps there was a bus line I could hop instead.
So then why wasnât I in my room packing my bags? Sure, there was the whole deal about the bloodthirsty vampire who had me on some kind of kill list. Mildly inconvenient. Then there was the part about the Supernatural Protection Agency, and their undoubtedly long reach. I could very well spend an entire day getting myself home again, only for some supernatural being to come and scoop me back up again. Maybe theyâd even snap a pretty little house arrest ankle bracelet on. An image of Agent Brambleâs harsh features flashed in my mind, and I swallowed. Hadnât Adam told me she was some type of bird of prey? I didnât really want to find out.
âSure,â I finally replied to Harmony. My tone was artificially bright, concealing the warring thoughts in my head. The truth of the matter was, there wasnât much for me to go back home to. As sad as it may sound, I could virtually be lifted out of my life with few people even noticing, let alone caring. And with a sprinkle of magic to fuzz the edges of the minds of those who would ... well, it was sobering to think about how easy it would be for me to go off the map like this. To remove myself from my own life. How messed up was that? I could go weeks without seeing anyone but my coworkers at work, my grumpy supervisor and the same salespeople at the grocery store and coffee shops that I visited.
